We have done a compilation of group buying sites and online grocery business in Malaysia. Now, let's do a compilation of online shopping mall in Malaysia.
Our focus here is a B2B2C model, or marketplace where merchants can list their product in the e-mall.
Mall operator in this case charge store rental and / or transaction commission from the merchants.
Arguably nobody has hit the success level yet (as in the level of Rakuten in Japan) as merchandising, merchant acquisition, investment to acquire customers, shopping experience are among the many challenges to make it a successful one.
Nevertheless, here are a few established players in the local market, feel free to suggest any addition to the list in the comment.
1. Superbuy

- Sister site of Lelong.my.
- Leverage on traffic from their hugely popular Lelong.my site.
- Arguably the best e-mall locally, due to their solid experience in e-commerce.
- No rental required, transaction based commission applied.
2. Postme
- Owned by Pos Malaysia Berhad.
- Leverage on their delivery network and service - Poslaju.
- Poslaju will pickup the product from merchant.
- Relatively expensive store rental - starts from RM720 / year.
3. AirAsiaMegastore
- Owned by AirAsia.
- Leverage on their huge member / customer database.
- Leverage on their cross promotion from AirAsia main site.
- Arguably selling well on their own merchandise.
4. Jipaban
- Owned by Nuffnang founders.
- Leverage on the Nuffnang blog network.
- More focus on Singapore market.
- No rental required, transaction based commission applied.
This year we witness the emergence of group buying sites. We dare to forecast that next year onwards will be the year of online shopping mall as there will be new solid players entering the market.
Whether anyone will pull it off is still to see, but competition will definitely be stiffer and it will only benefit local e-commerce industry. Stay tuned!
